The funeral service for Athena (Nounou) Martinou, who passed away on Friday, October 11, 2024, will be held in a private family circle on Monday, October 14, at 1:00 PM, at the Holy Church of Panagia Faneromeni in Vouliameni.

She was the most significant Greek woman in the contemporary history of Greek shipping, with a global impact.

She was a woman with a great contribution to society, always maintaining a very low profile. The Athena I. Martinou Foundation outlines the personality of the remarkable woman. “The starting point for the creation of the Foundation was Athena I. Martinou’s passion for the sea, and its purpose is to contribute to society, which is active around the sea and feels its daily presence in its veins,” it characteristically mentions, adding:

“Even today, it is the love for life itself that defines her. She herself, as she characteristically says, is “like the sea, of the feminine gender.” Her entire attitude towards life is the same as towards the sea. Love and passion, respect and dedication. That’s why she accepts life in all its aspects, whether calm and serene, or turbulent and stormy. Because Athena I. Martinou, like the sea, is never static. Bold and ambitious, hardworking and persistent, discreet and low-key, she is the Nounou of Greek shipping.”
