Four big names in Japanese maritime have debuted a design for a methanol-powered VLCC equipped with rotor sails.

Idemitsu Tanker, Iino Kaiun Kaisha, Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK), and Nihon Shipyard have provided details of the 339.5 m long, 309,400 dwt vessel which would also feature a shaft generator.

The backers of the new design claim it can achieve a CO2 reduction of more than 40% compared to the reference line against the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) regulation.

The companies said today they will aim for strategically phased shipbuilding orders as soon as possible for this next-generation eco-friendly VLCC working in partnership with Japanese refineries.
