A new 12-page white paper from US-based Marine Money has mapped out today’s maritime venture financing landscape with the research clearly showing the limited number of funds that are solely dedicated to the maritime sector.

More than 250 maritime startups that have been in existence for at least five years were analysed for the research, looking at the number and dollar amount of investments they have received.

“One of the key insights from this research is the limited number of funds that are solely dedicated to the maritime sector. As companies grow and their financing needs expand, the lack of maritime-exclusive funds becomes evident,” the white paper states.

Summarising the report, the author, Jonathan Chia suggested the new cycle of investment appears to be built on “more patient capital, long-term partnerships, and strategic investments”.

“Investors have learned valuable lessons from their initial forays into maritime tech and are now better positioned to provide the necessary support for these ventures to succeed. Investors not only appear to be looking for short-term returns but are also committed to fostering sustainable, long-term growth,” the white paper concluded.

The research was then turned into a chart (see below) with the horizontal axis outlining the investment stage while the vertical axis depicts how focused these firms are on the maritime sector.
