A milestone anniversary marked with culture, history, class and music
2025 marks a landmark moment for Aphentrica Marine Insurance Brokers Ltd, as the company celebrates its 30th anniversary.
To mark this milestone, Aphentrica chose not just a venue, but a stage deeply rooted in Cyprus’s cultural heritage: the Ancient Kourion Amphitheatre. On 3 October 2025, more than 400 clients, partners, and friends of the company gathered under the evening sky for a unique event that combined maritime legacy with the universal language of music — a Symphonic Rebetiko concert that blended tradition and innovation in a setting unlike any other.
30 Years of Excellence and Trust
From its earliest years, Aphentrica has been defined by its commitment to excellence and integrity. With a deep technical knowledge of the marine sector and an ethos of partnership that extends beyond contractual obligations, the company has safeguarded clients’ interests for three decades. Its global presence and trusted relationships with shipowners, insurers, and partners stand as a testament to the dedication of its people and the loyalty of its clients.
The anniversary was not only an occasion to reflect on the past but also to look to the future. As the shipping industry undergoes rapid transformation — through digitalisation, decarbonisation, and evolving risks — Aphentrica remains committed to adapting and expanding its services to meet new challenges.
A Historic Setting: Kourion
Few venues could embody this sense of continuity better than Kourion Amphitheatre, one of Cyprus’s most significant archaeological sites. Built in the 2nd century BC and later expanded in the Roman era, the theatre has been a cultural stage for millennia, with its circular orchestra and sweeping cavea overlooking the Mediterranean.
With a capacity of up to 3,500 spectators in its Roman phase, Kourion once hosted performances, gladiatorial contests, and civic gatherings before being abandoned after the great earthquake of 365 AD. Today, carefully restored, it remains one of the island’s most iconic cultural venues — a fitting place to celebrate a company whose foundations are rooted in both Cyprus and the wider maritime world.
Welcome Speeches
The evening began with welcoming meaningful, strong, touching speeches of its founders Marinos Vourgos and Anna Vourgos and from Alexandros Vourgos the second generation and successor of Aphentrica.
Marinos opened the evening by warmly welcoming the guests, or as he fondly put it, “dear friends” — to Aphentrica’s 30th anniversary celebration at the historic amphitheatre of Kourion. He reflected on the symbolism of the venue, connecting Cyprus’s ancient cultural heritage with Aphentrica’s own journey through time. Sharing the company’s humble beginnings, from a small office with second-hand furniture to a respected name in the maritime world, he spoke of the values that have anchored Aphentrica since its founding: integrity, trust, responsibility, and excellence. Marinos emphasised that the anniversary was not merely a corporate milestone but a celebration of people, colleagues, partners, and clients whose support and collaboration made the company’s story possible. He concluded by proudly introducing Alexandros, as the voice of Aphentrica’s next generation.
Alexandros expressed his honour in representing the future of the company. He spoke about the ever-evolving nature of the shipping industry, highlighting the challenges and opportunities that come with change. With confidence rooted in the company’s strong foundations, he affirmed his commitment to safeguarding Aphentrica’s core values while guiding it toward innovation and growth. Alexandros emphasized the importance of responsibility, vision, and adaptability in leading the company forward, ensuring that Aphentrica continues to uphold its reputation and serve its clients with distinction. He thanked all guests, colleagues, partners, and friends for their ongoing support and presence, which give purpose and direction to Aphentrica’s journey.
Anna concluded the speeches with heartfelt gratitude. She reflected on the thirty-year journey with appreciation for the challenges overcome, the friendships formed, and the trust built over time. She extended thanks to the Department of Antiquities for allowing the company to celebrate in such a historic venue, a space that beautifully united Cyprus’s heritage with Aphentrica’s own story. Anna also paid tribute to the performers and artists who enriched the evening with their music, transforming the anniversary into a memorable cultural experience. Above all, she praised Aphentrica’s dedicated team, whose loyalty, professionalism, and strength form the foundation of the company’s success. In closing, she expressed deep thanks to all clients and partners around the world, reminding everyone that while Aphentrica’s business lies in shipping, its true purpose is human to connect, to serve, and to move forward together.
Symphonic Rebetiko: A Celebration of Culture
The highlight of the evening was the performance of Symphonic Rebetiko by Yiannis Belonis, under the baton of Dr. Francis Nectarios Guy, Artistic Director of the Commandaria Orchestra. The programme was enriched by the participation of the newly established Kourion Municipal Mixed Choir and a lineup of distinguished soloists, including Kitrina Podilata, Betty Harlafti, and Spyros Kleissas and Bouzouki by Evangelos Zourmpoutis.
Rebetiko — often described as the “Greek blues” — emerged in the early 20th century as a voice of resilience, longing, and urban life. In 2017, UNESCO recognised rebetiko as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, affirming its cultural importance.
Belonis’s vision was to bring this tradition into dialogue with the symphonic form. The result is a unique orchestration where bouzouki, piano, and guitar — the heartbeat of rebetiko — are interwoven with the symphonic body, producing a vibrant and powerful reinterpretation of one of Greece’s most authentic musical genres.
The evening’s programme took the audience on a journey through iconic works — from Tik Tik Tak and Frangosyriani, To Monore tis Avgis, to Tountas and Skarvelis medleys — blending nostalgia with symphonic grandeur.

Beyond Business: A Shared Human Experience
By combining the maritime world with Cyprus’s cultural heritage, the evening transcended the boundaries of a typical corporate anniversary. It was a celebration of community, music, and identity — reflecting Aphentrica’s belief that shipping, like culture, is ultimately about people and shared journeys.
The concert ended with a surprise entrance and dance performance by Michalis Lanitis and thunderous applause as the amphitheatre echoed with the sounds of rebetiko, reimagined for a new era. As the final notes faded, guests were invited to a stunning cocktail reception overlooking the sea. The atmosphere was sophisticated yet warm, with ambient lighting, elegant décor, and a backdrop of soft music that carried the spirit of the evening into the night. A rich buffet accompanied the reception, offering guests an exceptional selection of dishes that complemented the fine cocktails and lively conversation. The celebration continued late into the evening, as colleagues, partners, and friends mingled in a relaxed and convivial setting, the perfect conclusion to a night where art, heritage, and maritime legacy came together in harmony.
Looking Ahead
As Aphentrica celebrates its 30 years, it remains firmly anchored in its values of integrity, trust, responsibility, and excellence, while steering confidently into the future. The challenges of tomorrow’s shipping world — from digitalisation to sustainability — are many, but Aphentrica’s three-decade journey shows that it has both the experience and the resilience to continue safeguarding its clients for decades to come.
The anniversary at Kourion was therefore not only a celebration of past achievements but also a promise for the future. And just as rebetiko found new life through symphonic interpretation, Aphentrica stands ready to adapt, evolve, and thrive in the ever-changing symphony of global shipping.
